Jessica Barry

Finance Officer

Jessica Barry is a nêhiyaw-iskwew from James Smith Cree Nation, Saskatchewan which is located in Treaty 6 territory and has been employed with Cando since 2009. Jessica’s post-secondary journey started in 2007, she successfully completed an Accounting Diploma (2009) and a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (2013) through NAIT. Jessica decided to pursue her second degree through the University of Alberta in 2014 and is expected to graduate in spring 2019. She will be obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. Upon graduating she will also be receiving the Aboriginal Governance and Partnership Certificate.

Her career path started in 2008, when she was accepted for a position at the Canadian Native Friendship Centre as an Aboriginal Liaison, this position allowed her to work with Indigenous youth and enhance their job placement in the work field. At this time, she felt that it was important to work towards empowering youth and continue to work within the Indigenous community. This valuable experience has opened many doors for her and she had the opportunity to continue to work with youth at Cando, facilitating the Aboriginal Business Dream Catcher Program geared towards Aboriginal youth.

Over the past 9 years, Jessica has held positions with Cando such as the National Conference Assistant, Fundraising and Finance Assistant and eventually into the Finance Officer role. Her responsibilities include administration of the full accounting cycle for both Cando and NIEEF’s financial affairs; also contributing with other Cando projects and financial reporting. Jessica’s future goals are to become a Certified General Accountant designation (CGA), attain her Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager designation and continue to work towards enhancing her skills by taking professional development training.
